Online Okey Arkadaşlarla: How to Play and Enjoy the Popular Turkish Game

Okey is a tile-based game that is very popular in Turkey and among Turkish communities abroad. It is a variant of rummy, played with a set of 106 wooden tiles. The aim of the game is to score points against the opposing players by collecting certain groups of tiles.

Okey can be played with four players, but can also be played with only two or three players. It bears resemblance to the game Rummikub, as it is played with the same set of boards and tiles, but under a different set of rules.

In this article, we will explain what okey is and how to play it, as well as how to play online okey with friends. We will also provide some tips and tricks for online okey, as well as some frequently asked questions.

What is Okey and How to Play It

The Origin and History of Okey

Okey is a game of the Rummy family, which originated in China and spread to other parts of the world. The word "okey" comes from the Turkish pronunciation of "okay", which is used to indicate approval or agreement in the game.

Okey is believed to have been derived from the original Rummikub after cultural contacts of Gastarbeiter (guest workers) in Germany. Rummikub is a tile-based game that was invented by Ephraim Hertzano, a Romanian-born Jew, who immigrated to Israel in the 1940s.

Okey became very popular in Turkey in the 1970s and 1980s, especially among urban middle-class people. It is also widely played among Turkish communities abroad, especially in Europe and North America.

The Equipment and Setup of Okey

Okey is played with a set of 106 wooden tiles. The faces of the tiles are numbered from 1 to 13, with the numbers printed in various colours. There are eight tiles of each number: two red, two yellow, two green and two black. In addition there are two special tiles with a shamrock, the so-called false jokers.

Every game also requires four racks, one for each player, to hold their tiles during the game. A pair of dice is used to determine the dealer and the okey (the wild card) for each round.

The 106 tiles are placed face down on the table and thoroughly mixed. Next, the players stack the tiles faced down in groups of five, creating a total of 21 stacks. There is no specific rule about how many stacks should be in front of each player. It is convenient to have at least six in front of the dealer, but this makes no real difference to the game. One tile remains unstacked and is kept by the dealer briefly. The dealer is randomly chosen at the start and passes to the right after every round.

continue from the right of the dealer. The dealer then places the tile face up on top of the chosen stack. This tile determines the okey (the wild card) for the round. The okey is the tile of the same colour and one number greater than the face up tile. For example, if the face up tile is a green 10, then the okey is a green 11. If the face up tile is a red 13, then the okey is a red 1. The two false jokers are also considered as okeys for the round.

The dealer then throws both dice again to determine from which stack each player will start taking tiles. The player to the dealer's right will start, and the turn will pass to the right after every move. The player will take tiles from the stack indicated by the sum of the dice. For example, if a 5 and a 6 are thrown, then the player will take tiles from the 11th stack in front of him or her (counting from left). If there are not enough stacks in front of him or her, then he or she will continue from his or her right neighbour's stacks.

The player takes one more tile than he or she needs for his or her hand, so that he or she has 15 tiles at the start. The other players will take 14 tiles each, so that each player has a hand of 14 tiles during most of the game. The remaining tiles are left on the table for later use.

The Rules and Objectives of Okey

The objective of okey is to be the first player to form a winning hand of groups and runs using all 14 tiles. A group is a set of three or four tiles of the same number and different colours. For example, a black 5, a red 5 and a green 5 form a group. A run is a set of three or more consecutive tiles of the same colour. For example, a yellow 7, a yellow 8 and a yellow 9 form a run. The okey (the wild card) can be used to represent any tile in a group or a run. For example, if the okey is a green 11, then it can be used as a green 10, a green 12, or any other tile.

A winning hand consists of either seven pairs (two tiles of the same number and colour), or six groups and/or runs (each containing at least three tiles), or five groups and/or runs plus one pair. For example, if the okey is a green 11, then these are some possible winning hands:

Red 2 - Red 2

Green 3 - Green 3

the discard pile of the previous player. The discard pile is placed face up next to the stacks, and only the top tile is visible. The player then discards one tile from his or her hand, placing it face up on top of the discard pile. The player can also end the game by declaring a winning hand, if he or she has one.

If there are no more tiles left on the table, and no one has declared a winning hand, then the game ends in a draw. The dealer then passes to the right, and a new round begins.

The Scoring and Strategy of Okey

The scoring of okey is based on points, which are determined by the tiles left in the hands of the losing players at the end of each round. Each tile has a point value equal to its number, except for the okey (the wild card) and the false jokers, which are worth 0 points. The tiles from 1 to 9 are called numbered tiles, and the tiles from 10 to 13 are called figure tiles.

If a player wins by declaring seven pairs, then he or she scores 4 points, plus the total points of all tiles in the other players' hands. If a player wins by declaring six groups and/or runs, or five groups and/or runs plus one pair, then he or she scores 2 points, plus the total points of all tiles in the other players' hands. If a player wins by drawing the last tile from the table, then he or she scores 1 point, plus the total points of all tiles in the other players' hands.

If a player has a winning hand at the start of the round, before drawing any tile, then he or she can declare it and score 2 points, plus the total points of all tiles in the other players' hands. This is called going out at the beginning.

If a player declares a winning hand incorrectly, or if he or she draws a tile when he or she already has a winning hand, then he or she is penalized by losing 2 points, plus paying each of the other players 2 points. This is called a false declaration.

The game can be played for a predetermined number of rounds, or until one player reaches a certain score, such as 100 points. The player with the highest score at the end of the game is the winner.

Some basic strategies for okey are:

  • Try to collect tiles that can form groups and runs easily, such as numbered tiles of different colours.

  • Try to avoid holding figure tiles for too long, as they are harder to use in groups and runs.

  • Try to use the okey (the wild card) wisely, as it can help you complete your groups and runs faster.

  • Try to keep track of which tiles have been discarded and which ones are likely to be in your opponents' hands.

  • Try to bluff your opponents by discarding tiles that they might need or want.
